  2. Hey guys. Nice to see you working out even though I can't be there. You've got a great coach if he's willing to do all this. WOW!! Good work Rich. I see some great things in this practice session. Dan Kestle is a natural. Keep it up Dan. You had a bit of a late start on your Pole Vault Journey, but your fundamentals are progressing quickly and will transfer to higher heights much easier in the future with the good technique you are developing now. Lower heights with good technique now will translate into not breaking as many bad habits in the future and people's heads will one day turn and say: "Where'd this guy come from?" You will stand out by the end of the season, I think. Cat, you look excellent in the sand drills, but I'd like you to work on one element of it...Look at the final video in the blog (the one in slow motion). Your pole is in the sand before you leave the ground. It's subtle, but it's there. You should be in the air slightly before the pole enters the sand to maximize your lift and create a smoother transition. This will carry over to the runway which will make it easier for you to start bending a pole. Regarding your box drills, adding weight to the box is good, but building confidence and technique in the drill with a lighter box at first might work better. Then begin to add weight. You might even consider combining the sand and box drill with the hurdles. Once you get the timing of the sand plant down, back up, put the sliding plant box down and perform the same mechanics (hurdles and all) into the sliding box (but don't jump into the sand...the sliding box will move of course). Drive the knee up, press the arms upward, bend the pole...really move that box as a result and then do it on the real runway...nothing changes (Rich, giving her a push/"tap" here might be helpful to get her into the pit safely and feel what real bend is like). Pause the video at 1:52. See how much your left knee is bent and how much the pole is already bent? Then check out what happens to your hips. You perform it better later on, but this is preventing you from legitimately bending the pole and being in the right position to swing. Every improvement on this one thing (timing), no matter how small will improve your vault. Alyssa really started to get it at the end of last year (I would say one week too late as it was. But look at what happened all of a sudden). You have a year and a half, so keep working on it. I'll try and come by sometime. It will have to be on a weekend though, so somebody keep me up to date on when Saturday practices are. Thanks for the site Rich. Thanks for taking over. There's no way I could have given them the time and dedication that you are giving them this year. All of the vaulters are very lucky to have your time and knowledge. Keep working hard everybody.
